I saw noticed this today on my Blu-ray copy of Lost season 3. During episode 15 at the 32:15 mark you can see the face of the black smoke dissolve into a skull frame by frame.
I had my contrast set to 100% (10,000:1) in order to see these images. But I'm sure if you squint you could noticed them on a less contrasty television.
